Without old zip, Dontrelle Willis appears headed for release

There is no indication from the Tigers that any such move is likely. But it appears from how the pitchers have performed during the past three weeks that Willis is not throwing with enough zip or command to be a serious factor in the rotation. - 03/20/2010

Fu-Te Ni starts, beats Phillies on 'bullpen day' for Tigers

Fu-Te Ni warms up before the first inning against the Phillies.

Fu-Te Ni starting? He did Saturday and was the winning pitcher in the Tigers' 3-0 victory over the Phillies, but don't be fooled. "It's a bullpen day," manager Jim Leyland said. - 03/20/2010

Tigers' Bobby Seay suffers major setback with shoulder injury

Bobby Seay: "The feeling I have in my arm is nothing I've ever felt before."

Bobby Seay has suffered a major setback to his left shoulder. Instead of improving, he said he felt intolerable pain during a throwing session Saturday and decided to shut it down. The next step is for him to undergo an MRI. - 03/20/2010

Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello troubled by pace

Rick Porcello wasn't quite right against the Yankees, giving up four hits and four runs over three innings. Mike Carlson/Associated Press

The Tigers right-hander's pitch count and strike ratio were out of whack Friday in a 6-2 loss to the Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field. He threw 60 pitches, 36 strikes. - 03/20/2010

Spring training: Tigers 4, Braves 4 (SS)

Jeremy Bonderman's outing shows he still has work to do

Jeremy Bonderman hit the second batter he faced, then gave up consecutive doubles to Chipper Jones and Brian McCann of the Braves on Friday.

Bonderman's appearance wasn't a statement that said he's ready to start the season. Only that the Tigers pitcher still is getting ready. - 03/19/2010

A look at the Tigers' outfield -- present and future

Ryan Strieby, center, has had a tender wrist but could put up some heavy numbers when he arrives in Detroit.

Present and future. It is an interesting cast of outfielders the Tigers will field in 2010 -- and beyond -- based upon what's been on display during the past month. - 03/19/2010

Yankees 6, Tigers 2

Tigers provide little excitement in loss to Yankees

Rick Porcello's blemishes during a four-inning shift were fairly tame as he allowed only one earned run, a long home run by Alex Rodriguez. But he was not as surgically precise as he tends to be, throwing only 36 strikes among his 60 pitches. - 03/19/2010

Tigers reliever Zach Miner (elbow) might not be ready for Opening Day

Tigers reliever Zach Miner has a 12.15 ERA in five appearances this spring.

Miner is fresh off a ligament scare in his right elbow. It's only strained -- which is better than he feared -- but as of Friday morning, he didn't know when he'll be able to throw again. - 03/19/2010

Dontrelle Willis still in running to start for Tigers

Dontrelle Willis was effective Thursday but his fastball did not break 89 mph.

Willis threw nothing harder than 89 miles an hour. When his start was over, he spoke about back spasms and a sore thumb that bothered him. Plus he hit a batter and walked a batter in the same inning. - 03/19/2010

Tigers option pitcher Armando Galarraga to Toledo

Armando Galarraga was 6-10 with a 5.64 ERA in 29 games for the Tigers last season.

In a more expected move, rookie Jacob Turner was optioned to West Michigan. Turner was impressive, but only 18 years old, and was never in the running for a major-league job this spring. - 03/19/2010

Tigers' Bobby Seay likely will miss Opening Day; Zach Miner 'out a while'

Bobby Seay had a 4.25 ERA in 67 appearances for the Tigers last season.

Manager Jim Leyland also said Thursday that a tender right elbow will keep right-hander Zach Miner out of action for a while, though Leyland added that Miner had some tests and "nothing major" was found. - 03/18/2010

Tigers' rotation puzzle no closer to solution

Tigers pitching coach Rick Knapp comes out to talk with pitcher Nate Robertson after a fourth-inning walk. The lefty yielded two runs.

About the only thing wrong with spring training is what's right about it. Pitchers look like Sandy Koufax in bullpen sessions. Hitters crush pitches during batting practice. - 03/18/2010

Scott Sizemore's ankle passes speed test

Jayson Werth of the Phillies slides into second base ahead of a throw to Tigers second baseman Scott Sizemore in Clearwater, Fla.

The rookie second baseman needed to know the ankle he broke in the Arizona Fall League will allow him to be ready. He got that answer in the Tigers' 6-3 victory over the Pirates. - 03/18/2010

Tony Paul: Baseball Insider

Mike Lowell might be headed back to Marlins

Former Tigers closer Fernando Rodney has battled sore shins in camp with the Angels.

We're a little more than two weeks till Opening Day, which means teams are starting to get a pretty clear idea of needs and surpluses. That could lead to several moves -- trades, releases, etc. -- as spring training comes to a close. - 03/18/2010

Rangers manager Ron Washington says he used pot, amphetamines as a player

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said manager Ron Washington, above, will keep his job. He said the team was aware Washington used drugs as a player.

A day after acknowledging he failed a drug test for cocaine last year, Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington admits he used marijuana and amphetamines while he was a player. - 03/18/2010

Nate Robertson effective in Tigers' win over Pirates

Nate Robertson gave up four hits and two runs, and struck out three in four innings.

Deciding that even the ugliest baseball game wasn't so ugly that it couldn't be won, the Tigers put away the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-3, Wednesday at McKechnie Field. - 03/17/2010

Rangers manager Ron Washington used cocaine last season

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington failed a Major League Baseball test for cocaine last season. He has apologized and will keep his job. - 03/17/2010

Tigers' Austin Jackson given green light to steal in camp

A leadoff batter whose hitting and pitch-judgment have been better than expected turned his new freedom into a stolen base that led to the Tigers' only run in a 6-1 loss to the Phillies. - 03/17/2010

Tigers' Bobby Seay building up arm strength after late start

Bobby Seay: "I'm obviously not where I need to be, because I haven't even thrown a breaking ball yet."

Relief pitcher Bobby Seay said Wednesday he felt "a lot better than I thought I was going to" -- a day after throwing off a mound for the first time this spring. - 03/17/2010

Tigers ace Justin Verlander up and down in latest spring start

Tigers pitcher was erratic against the Phillies on Tuesday.

Sizing up Justin Verlander's outing against the Phillies on Tuesday was a matter of interpretation. Tigers manager Jim Leyland wasn't sure which way to go. - 03/17/2010

Dave Dombrowski likes balance, depth of Tigers' roster

Austin Jackson's strikeouts have been down this spring. Last season he struck out 123 times in 504 at-bats at Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

Dave Dombrowski, the man who made some roster-shaking trades during the past offseason, said Tuesday he was pleased with the way new -- and old -- personnel have been melding during spring camp. - 03/16/2010

Phillies bop Tigers with three homers

Justin Verlander gave up three hits in 3 1/3 innings.

They pitched fairly well, they stung the ball with more zest than their hit totals showed -- and still it wasn't a contest when the Tigers met the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday. - 03/16/2010

Joel Zumaya's woes puzzling Tigers

Joel Zumaya has allowed five runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings this spring, for a 9.64 ERA. He's hit a batter, walked two and struck out only two.

They are numbers you might expect from a journeyman trying to land a roster spot, or a kid pitcher destined for a season in the bushes. - 03/16/2010

Trade rumors anger Albert Pujols

Talk of a megatrade kept baseball buzzing Monday following an ESPN report the Philadelphia Phillies were thinking about asking the St. Louis Cardinals if they'd like to swap star first basemen. - 03/16/2010

The Los Angeles Dodgers have sent former Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne to their minor league camp, stalling the closer's bid to make it back to the majors. - 03/16/2010

Tigers offense has been better than advertised

Some from the Tigers' nervous fan base thought the team's bats would be about as sturdy as linguine. - 03/15/2010

Tigers could eat big contracts if Eddie Bonine is starter

Bonine has pitched well and could end up as a rotation winner, especially if two of the three top contenders -- Jeremy Bonderman, Dontrelle Willis and Nate Robertson -- don't appear trustworthy down the stretch. - 03/15/2010

Tigers get 14 hits in 10-7 win over Blue Jays

The Tigers scored four times in the eighth to win it, three of the runs scoring on infielder Brent Dlugach's bases-loaded double. Jacob Turner, 18, pitched two scoreless innings for the Tigers. - 03/15/2010

Jim Leyland touched by several Tigers' attitudes

Manager Jim Leyland already has said starters who don't make his rotation are not guaranteed a place in the bullpen.

Dontrelle Willis, Jeremy Bonderman, and Nate Robertson -- three starters who will not all make the 2010 rotation -- all were pulling for each other during Saturday's victory over the Yankees in which all three pitched. - 03/15/2010

Austin Jackson makes serious strides with Tigers

Austin Jackson, right, is congratulated by teammate Magglio Ordonez after scoring on a single by Johnny Damon in the bottom of the fifth inning during a spring training game Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays in Lakeland, Fla.

Jackson is batting .429 after he ripped a pair of triples and a single in Sunday's 9-6 victory over the Rays at Marchant Stadium, all before the fourth-largest crowd in Marchant history, 9,671. - 03/15/2010

Giving thanks. Some players do it when they cross the plate. Some in the dugout for all to see. Willis, without fanfare, does it. He didn't know someone had noticed. - 03/13/2010
