The Obama administration must move to ease tensions with Israel. Allowing relations to fray with our truest ally in the Middle East is not in the best interests of the United States or Israel and presents a threat to the stability of the region.

George Will: Betting on yet another education fix

Doubling down on dubious bets is characteristic of compulsive gamblers and federal education policy. The nation was essentially without such policy for grades K through 12, and better off for that, until 1965. In that year of liberals living exuberantly, they produced the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Now yet another president has announced yet another plan to fix education. His aspiration has a discouraging pedigree.

Editorial Quick Hits: Boost campaign disclosure

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is asking Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land for a ruling on what details it must disclose regarding its spending on campaigns, now that a U.S. Supreme Court decision has opened the door for unlimited corporate funding of campaign and issue advertising. The chamber wants to know whether it's enough to disclose that money it spends on behalf of office seekers and causes has come from its own treasury, or also must name the businesses that poured bucks into its campaign kitty. Michigan citizens deserve to know precisely who's bankrolling any and all efforts, from the chamber, unions and other groups, to influence their opinions and votes. Lawmakers should make Land's job easier by passing new requirements to guarantee that.

Maybe it's time for the United States to be something akin to a world cop, at least in Mexico, working as actively as needed with the government of President Felipe Calderon to defeat drug cartels that torture cops to death, assassinate journalists, will slaughter 15 teens partying at someone's house and even enter funeral homes and kill the mourners.
